Children and Young People’s Preference of Thematic Design and Color for their Hospital Environment

Updated: Aug 29, 2021

Why use thematic design within a therapeutic environment for children? Learn more below...

The views of children and young people has been neglected in the design process for far too long. Even when designing spaces specifically for children, the process is done entirely by an adult designer with typically no research done into the preferences of the end users. Through the study "Children and young people’s preference of thematic design and color for their hospital environment", by Coad J. and Coad N. we explore the true preferences of children for their hospital environment in regards to theme and color. With this study, several factors can be applied to the New Beginnings building in order to design a space specifically aimed for the comforts and enjoyment of the end user.

With regards to thematic design, several patterns emerged within the study. To begin, the participants noted that despite a desire for thematic design, the space still must be appropriate and functional for the end use. For example, having theme, unless subtle, within a therapeutic space would be inappropriate and disruptive the child’s healing process.

Theme within common spaces was well received within participants, with a strong preference for larger theme in areas of play. Areas such as corridors were preferred to have subtle theme incorporating strong wayfinding techniques. Things suggested by participants include painted footprint flooring details, and colorful signage.

“I think you could make it different and interesting everywhere we look there should be something happening and changing -Everywhere we look there should be something new to look at.”

Types of themes were also explored revealing an overall preference of water, nature, the beach, and trees. This being said, an appropriateness of the type of theme must also be taken into consideration. The full chart of preferences for thematic design has been included below for your viewing convenience.

In addition to thematic design, color preferences were explored. This revealed a preference not for bright colors as previous studies indicated, but rather pale to mid range colors. The most popular color preference throughout the study were the mid blue-green color range.

In most private spaces, a single, slightly muted color was preferred within the space, or in some cases an accent color combination. For common areas, especially areas of play, Stronger color, with more color combination was preferred. The full chart of the preferences for color:
